The powerful benefits of Olive Oil

Olive oil and Health

A Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil has been linked to several other health benefits, such as the prevention of cardiovascular disease and Diabetes type 2 among others.

The Mediterranean diet is known for its healthy properties.

Apart from the well known benefits of this diet for our general wellbeing, there are recent studies that connect the consumption of olive oil, combined with other Mediterranean ingredients, to the prevention of skin cancer.In a study carried out by the University of Tel Aviv, the researchers organized two groups in the Baltic Sea.

They gave drinks rich in antioxidants -a component that can be found in olive oil – to one of the groups, while they provided the other group with simple sodas.

After two weeks in which the participants exposed themselves to the sun for around six hours per day, they found that the group that had the drinks with antioxidants had developed a higher resistance to the sun rays. In other studies, they found that the antioxidants, in particular carotenoids (fruit and vegetable pigments) can accumulate in the skin and act as a line of protection.

They explained that this first line of protection can delay the phenomenon that starts damaging the skin and leads to skin cancer.
